Hyla Brook Books // my online bookstore

this article originally appeared on Wordpress January 1, 2019

I wanted to share some exciting news. I know it's every book worms dream to own a book store, but I honestly can't stop dreaming about it. I'm inspired by small business owners and other women entrepreneurs. I'm selling books with the poetry lover in mind. I'm also hoping to collab with other shops. I needed to come up with a graceful way to make money for my much needed MRI and surgery. When I started designing my new business it gave me something to look forward to.

Most of my vintage books are geared toward the artist. These are all from my beloved book collection. There's a set on Ancient Greece, which has always been a source to fuel my poetry🧡 During this dark time in my life I've turned a lot to poetry especially Robert Frost and William Blake. My aesthetic is inspired by Robert Frost and I'm so excited to watch my business grow.

I have so many ideas for my online book shop. Im using left over packaging supplies and business cards from my now - closed crochet shop. I want to make nature resin jewelry, it might be doable with one arm. I have to put the jewelry making on hold, but you'll see!

The hard part will be getting new books. It takes money to start a business, so I've priced my books to help me make a living and invest a little bit in growth. I'm hoping I can play my cards right, and start supporting myself again while I heal.

This has been a dream of mine so maybe a good way to look at this is that it pushed me to open a shop.

I did such a good job designing Hyla Brook Books! It's based off a personal Robert Frost Poem. The last lines are "We love the things we love for what they are."

End of Month Reseller Report - July 2021

How much did I make in July? It's August 2nd and I'm taking a look back at my accomplishments.  What Sold July 1-7 What Sold July 8-14 What Sold July 15-21 What Sold July 22-31 I made $235.54 selling books. I did my first ever listing challenge and I want to do another one - stricker dead line.  List 100 Items in 13 Days. That's half the time it took to do the original challenge. 13 is also the date I was born. A Baker's Dozen. Perfect! When I told Joe at the Post Office I wanted to make $1k or $800 a month he blew a tire and looked skeptical, and he kinda laughed. We both did. Is it such a crazy idea that I deserve this? That at the end of everything, I'll be the owner of a secondhand bookshop. Some cool things I added to my shop: Magic The Gathering Cards, skirts, I opened my Ebay store and added items but haven't completed the set up.  Also, my new goal is to make $100 each week by pursuing sales. Offering to likers on Depop which i never do - posting more i...

What Sold July 1-7

These weekly What Sold posts kept me organized, so I'm bringing them back. I review what items sold on each platform, how much it sold, the fees, and what my profit was. Every month I have the same goal to make $350, but my dream goal is to make $800 per month just by selling books. I currently sell on Depop, Mercari, Instagram, Etsy, and various Facebook groups. Depop has been incredibly slow - I have not made any July sales yet. In June I had 4 orders, in May I had 3, in April I had 6 orders, 7 orders in March, 9 in February, and 7 in January. That gives you an idea how many orders come through Depop and why it's important to cross list. I think I have more sales on Mercari. The Summer Slowdown is here! I haven't made any sales yet on Mercari in July. Mercari makes it a little harder to view your sales history in chronological order, but here is how many orders went through each month this year 2021 on Mercari: January - | | | | | | February - March - | | | | | | | | Ap...

Selling on Ebay for Beginners - Pt. 1

I am brand new to selling on Ebay, I avoided it because I personally felt that the interface felt outdated, I never buy anything on Ebay, and Ebay seems intimidating . On the other platforms I sell on, it is so easy and fast to list. When I listed my first item, it felt like I was filing out paperwork at a doctor's office. It's going to take some time to get used to Ebay's layout, a newcomer can't navigate the Seller's Hub so quickly. It's free to register. Ebay will send an amount to your bank you have to confirm to receive payments. When you first start out, you can only list 10 items per month, this renews every 90. You have to build up your "feedback" - so I'll have to make a purchase or two through Ebay. (Going to see if I can find a Samsung Technologies Q2U microphone to upgrade my Podcast!) This link below is essential reading for new Ebay sellers: https://export.ebay.com/en/listings/limits/selling-limits/ The website says 10, but I was onl...
