Your Death Pile : The Afterlife for Items that Never Sold

I know your dark secret. Admit it, it's hidden in storage and closets, it's your greed at a time where everything you saw were dollar signs. The sales were so good you got more than you bargained for! Death pile is a term resellers use for their unsold inventory. It's time to dig up the graveyard and give those items a new life. 💀

Be honest with yourself. Are you going to resell it? Keep it? Donate it?

The first step for me was to package all my books into boxes. I dedicated shelf space for my personal collection, books for sale and books I wanted to list.

It gave me space to reimagine my shop and I started getting day dreamy about  reopening my secondhand bookshop, Hyla Brook Books.

A few months ago when I announced closing my shop I was so sad, like something died. Not like a pet but something in me felt defeated. Except now I'm starting to see what's beyond the beyond! 👻

Something else to consider is that I banned myself from buying more books. I can honestly say I haven't brought more books into my house for a solid 4 months, probably this whole year of 2022. 👻👻🏠👻👻

I wanted to have more curated collections. 🍂🎃 For you that might look like wanting to sell only vintage clothes or shoes or be known for a certain aesthetic.

Some resellers might decide to tackle their death pile by listing items from their Death Pile every day. This is also called "Money Piles." It's a way to reframe your business mind.

As a bookseller, I'm asking myself why books haven't sold in 2 years - have I listed it enough? Were the photos professional enough? Was it fair priced? It's through experience that we realize what we are willing to spend energy and time on.

There are a lot of books in my Death Pile I don't care to sell any more. I had the mindset of "if i can make even .70 cents back I want to sell it," but now my mindset is more of "what can i sell for the most profit?" Consider the time you have to list. Something the Pandemic has taught us about the workforce is that we our time is limited.  ⚰️

I missed the thrill of the hunt! I now have two empty shelves to add books I want to list, and a whole shelf full of books that are currently listed. When I reopen my shop, it will be easy to find everything and promote my new stock.

As a reseller, be kind to yourself. The dream isn't dead. You still have goals your working towards. Don't let your death piles leave you stagnant.

Instead of listing my death pile, it's brought  me more joy to give away books. Whether you believe in karma or grace, giving back more than you receive is an act of kindness. It's good for your soul. In a world where there's a lot of harsh judgement, it does a lot of good to be kind. This evidence comes from personal experience. Who knows how someone can benefit from the boots that have been in your storage for 2 years?

Stay disciplined. Just like getting out of debt, getting rid of your death pile requires discipline. When I get more books, like I did in my Fall Haul (post here) and at the Free Library (post coming soon!)  then I have to donate the number of books I got times two.

I got 19 new books added to the shop yesterday so I need to donate 38 books before October ends!!

End of the Month Reseller Report // January 2023

I am a part time reseller on Mercari, Pango Books, and Ebay. I flip books online, I love having an online bookstore. Here is a break down of my January sales. This was my first month back reselling! I am hosting a giveaway to welcome back all my readers over on my Facebook page where I am giving away 12 vintage true crime novels. I also wanted to celebrate by doing a fundraiser to raise money and awareness for my favorite cat rescue.  My Cost of Goods were .25! I didn't have to pay anything in shipping, here's a small break down of the platform fees: Mercari:  -$3.56 Pango Books:   -.79 Ebay:   $-1.31 Overall, I had a total of 7 transactions. A total of 9 books left the shop! 3 on Mercari 1 on Pango Books and 1 on Ebay. I also had 2 transactions on Paypal. (100% of the profits went to the rescue.) My goal is consistent sales, I ended up listing only 37 books in the month of January. More listings equals more sales!!  My net profit was $17.28, BUT I di...

When Your Best Friend Pulls Out A Yearbook 2010

It's so crazy to look back at myself more than 10 years ago - my skinny jeans, converse wearing, side swept bangs and puka shell necklace self. I just noticed my legs are crossed in both photos. John Earl had a mega crush on me, and we were Literary sweethearts and he even bought me my first typewriter : a vintage Royal typewriter with a locking case.  He ended up marrying a very pretty girl and he seems like the perfect husband.  I was in Literacy Circle (a club for readers) all years in highschool and worked as a media assistant those years too.  Funny how I'm looking at this photograph, 10 years later, selling books.

End of Month Reseller Report - July 2021

How much did I make in July? It's August 2nd and I'm taking a look back at my accomplishments.  What Sold July 1-7 What Sold July 8-14 What Sold July 15-21 What Sold July 22-31 I made $235.54 selling books. I did my first ever listing challenge and I want to do another one - stricker dead line.  List 100 Items in 13 Days. That's half the time it took to do the original challenge. 13 is also the date I was born. A Baker's Dozen. Perfect! When I told Joe at the Post Office I wanted to make $1k or $800 a month he blew a tire and looked skeptical, and he kinda laughed. We both did. Is it such a crazy idea that I deserve this? That at the end of everything, I'll be the owner of a secondhand bookshop. Some cool things I added to my shop: Magic The Gathering Cards, skirts, I opened my Ebay store and added items but haven't completed the set up.  Also, my new goal is to make $100 each week by pursuing sales. Offering to likers on Depop which i never do - posting more i...
